Last summer, Asian Raisins, in collaboration with Queer Amsterdam and the restaurant September, organised its second speed dating event for East and Southeast Asian queers.
This free event was part of the Asian Pride program, aimed at contributing to a safer and more vibrant LGBTQI+ community in the Netherlands for those connected to Asia through their ethnicity, nationality, or (cultural) background.
During the speed dates, current dominant societal norms—often centered on romantic, heteronormative relationships—were questioned and challenged. The theme of “non-romantic love” was explored by interpreting “love” in the broadest sense of the word. Topics included self-love, love for (chosen) family, and deep bonds of friendship.
The heartfelt conversations were complemented by stunning performances that showcased various perspectives on love. Qiyun Zheng, who also hosted the speed dating sessions, pushed linguistic and cultural boundaries with their Voguing-inspired dance performance. QiQi van Boheemen highlighted the power of vulnerability and the importance of non-romantic relationships, while Shivam shared personal stories and experiences through the art of storytelling.
We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who joined us for the open, meaningful conversations and connections that emerged. We hope to welcome you all again next year!
