Kippitan interview

In Asian Praisings we give special attention to people of Asian origin. Through short interviews, we hope to improve the representation of Asian Dutch. This time our interviewee is Kippitan.

We asked Hale (19) some questions, who is also known as ‘Kippitan’. She regularly goes live in different Facebook groups to show her process and to answer questions. She makes paintings, illustrations and customizes shoes and accessories.

HALE, TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOURSELF

My name is Hale, I am 19 years old and my artist name is ‘Kippitan’. Most people know me by my creativity and by my personality in and outside social media.

where does the name ‘kippitan’ come from?

This may sound very strange, but I came up with the name when I was about 13 or 14 years old. I really like chicken – which translates to ‘kip’ in Dutch – and wanted to mix it with something. ‘Tan’ is used in Japanese as a suffix placed after a name meaning to call someone cute. For example ‘Hale-Tan’ or ‘Rui-Tan’. I then came up with ‘Kippi-Tan’ and just like that the name ‘Kippitan’ was born.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF?

As a calm person. I am purposeful, I respect every person and respect people in their own way. I also try to ask different questions and thus get different perspectives. Instead of being prejudiced towards people.

WHAT LANGUAGES DO YOU SPEAK?

I speak Dutch, English, Turkish and Japanese. Although I stopped learning Japanese for a few years, I still know a lot of words. My father wanted to go on a family visit in Japan, but unfortunately he was too sick and passed away in 2013. By visiting Japan, I want to make his dream come true. I also would like to learn Mandarin Chinese; I only know a few words. Lastly, I know a few Korean words by watching Korean drama series.

Why do you do what you do?

It is a kind of urge that I have. I can’t stop creating art such as drawing, painting and customizing. When I was 15, though, I didn’t really make time to create art because at that time I was busy with sports.

WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION FROM?

I get my inspiration from everywhere: when I see people in public transport, people around me, photos that I see on the internet and by watching Asian dramas, anime series and cartoons.

What are your favorite anime and Asian dramas?

I think I have watched more than 170 different anime series and many Japanese and Korean drama series. ErasedOne PieceKamisama HajimemashitaDeath Parade are probably my favorite anime series.

Currently I’m watching ‘The world of the married’, which is a good Korean drama series in my opinion, as well as ‘Hi Bye, Mama’. I have watched many drama series but these two are my favorites!

WHAT WAS YOUR BEST PROJECT?

I find this a difficult question to answer. I’m proud of a lot of things I have made, but if I had to choose I would pick my blue Goku painting (photo below).
