For our monthly column “Asian Praisings,” we put an initiative or a person with East and/or Southeast Asian roots in the spotlight. This time, that will be Sandra Pham, winner of the Young Impact Awards Diversity 2023 and artist.

inspiRATION FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCES

In 2022, Sandra’s career began to take off. To top it all off, she got the opportunity to produce her own theatre show ‘Binnenvetter’. It was intense as the entire production was directed by Sandra herself, and she had to do everything alone. ‘I believe you learn the most when you start things you don’t think you are ready for,’ Sandra says. ‘The theatre show was like that for me.’

“Creating art is a fun process, and I enjoy it, but I also work through my pain by channelling it into something."

Sandra draws inspiration from her personal experiences. ‘Creating art is a fun process, and I enjoy it, but I also work through my pain by channelling it into something.” Her work and creations are definitely her personal coping mechanism.

"There are so many people with Asian roots in the Netherlands, and you don't see that reflected on television or in Dutch series yet. I want the diversity of Dutch society to be visible in the media."

“I don’t see myself represented in the Dutch media yet,” says Sandra. A significant inspiration for her is Nhung Dam, a writer, theatre maker, and actress known for productions like De Bananengeneratie. Like Sandra, Nhung has a Vietnamese background. “There are so many people with Asian roots in the Netherlands, and you don’t see that reflected on television or in Dutch series yet. I want the diversity of Dutch society to be visible in the media.”

What can we expect from Sandra in the future? “I am looking for professional guidance and financial support to figure out what strategically is the best next step. I have many skills and ideas, but, of course, things shouldn’t just stay at ideas. With some help, I can focus more and make new art again.” As Asian Raisins, we are extremely proud of Sandra for winning the Young Impact Award in the Diversity category and look forward to her future work!
